The Industrial Technologies Program supports cost-effective research and development aimed at lowering costs, reducing emissions, and improving reliability and performance to expand opportunities for the installation of distributed energy equipment today and in the future. Program activities are focused on two technology areas: 1) Distributed energy technologies; and 2) Integrated energy Systems.

Alaska

The Alaska Energy Authority works in cooperation with 118 independent utilities and covers an enormous range of geographic and economic diversity. See Energy System Upgrades Program and scroll down to Rural Power System Upgrade Program.

Peter Crimp is the Section Head for Alternative Energy and Energy Efficiency, AIDEA/AEA, Anchorage, AK. He manages and coordinates State of Alaska hydroelectric, energy conservation, diesel generation efficiency, heat recovery, geothermal, biomass, intertie, solar, and wind energy activities. Currently Crimp’s section is involved in 40 projects totaling $30 million in state and federal funding, with a focus on project development in the 200+ rural communities that are not tied to the Anchorage-Fairbanks power grid. Technical and planning duties include economic assessment of village power and facility space heating alternatives, management of the Alaska Rural Energy Plan, and management of the state’s biomass, small hydro, rural intertie, and heat recovery programs.

Devany Plentovich is the Program Manager for Biomass and Combined Heat and Power for the Alaska Energy Authority, focusing on project development in the 200+ rural communities that are not tied to the Anchorage-Fairbanks power grid.   She has a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a Master’s Degree in Environmental Science and Policy.  Devany’s previous experience includes 22 years with Kimberly-Clark Corporation where she managed various projects in recycled fiber, biomass co-generation, tissue manufacturing, product development, and environmental sustainability.  She also has extensive experience in operations and maintenance management. 

Idaho

The Idaho Office of Energy Resources is part of the Idaho state government. Idaho is now actively engaging in the development of CHP. The contact person is:

Brian has a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and over 25 years experience and background in sales, marketing, logistics, business development, operations, and management. He was employed by a Fortune 50 company for fourteen years in various levels of management. He has extensive experience at selling and negotiations at all levels. Brian has been recognized for exceptional ability to develop innovative programs that provide long-term positive results. Awards include the Ashland Presidential Award and MT-DEQ’s and Governor’s Excellence in Performance Awards.

Haines is the Bioenergy Program Manager for the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and Department of Natural Resources and Conservation since 1982. His chemical engineering background and work in energy includes over 34 years in biomass, clean diesel, combined heat and power projects, and biofuels, and includes the development of many partnered projects. These include the Truck in the Park Biodiesel Demonstration with Yellowstone National Park and the successful development of the Society of Automotive Engineers’ (SAE) Clean Snowmobile Challenge (CSC), initiated by a grant through EPA Region VIII in 1999. Haines has received numerous outstanding achievement awards from entities as diverse as the Department of Energy, EPA, CONOCO, the National Park Foundation and SAE. Howard has assisted with or authored over 137 articles and publications.

Oregon

The Oregon Department of Energy and the Oregon Public Utilities Commission (OPUC) are focused on a major overhaul of CHP policy. A number of studies and position papers are drafted. The OPUC is considering a number of changes to the rules. Contact persons are:
